Steroids and Fat Metabolism

Steroids should only be taken under close supervision of a doctor. The information provided here should not be taken as medical advice.

Fat metabolism is another area that’s considered by many to be positively affected by ASS. Athletes such as boxers, sprinters and endurance athletes and athletes competing in weight categorised events might aim to lose fat especially when training for an up-coming event or during the pre-season phase of their training. Since muscle mass increases its thought that basal metabolic rate (BMR) increases resulting in loss of fat. However although fat free mass is known to increase (figure2) there is little evidence to support the theory that there is a reduction in whole body fat.

Bhasin et al.,(1996) found no changes in body weight other than the increase in fat free mass which was fully attributed to the increased muscle mass therefore no loss of fat seemed to occur. After reviewing the literature Hartgens and Kuipers (2004) also concluded that a reduction of fat mass does not seem to occur. Overall the role ASS has on fat metabolism and fat loss has very little evidence proving or disproving the theory. Few studies have investigated the effects of ASS on fat metabolism especially under the correct parameters. Conclusive evidence is therefore hard to come by so further study is definately required to fully elucidate this area.
