Power for fitness exercise and dietPower

Power is the ability to exert a maximal force in as short a time as possible. It can be measured by short explosive tasks performed with fast repetition. Two typical tests for measuring power are the vertical jump test and the standing long jump test. We would recommend you use the vertical jump test for power as it is simple and easy to perform. The measurement is not influenced to anylarge degree by skill or technique. In the vertical jump test, you jump vertically from a squat position, landing with both feet and hands on the mat or floor, repeatedly for one minute and the number of jumps achieved in one minute is recorded.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Jump Test for Power

The measuring equipment is readily available. Jump height can be measured, but to be accurate, you must ensure that both feet land back on the mat. The problem with this test is that it only measures the power within the leg and not the rest of the body. As with other test described here, it is one component in a series of tests which will measure overall fitness level and show progress over time.

Compare the results of your test with those in the following table:

Typical Jump Test Scores (Men)
  Jumps/min
Excellent >70
Good 61-70
Above average 51-60
Average 41-50
Below average 31-40
Poor 21-30
Very poor < 21
